Arms for a Woman and her Children
The text of a ruling by the Kings of Arms dated 6 March 2026
We, Garter, Clarenceux and Norroy & Ulster Kings of Arms, do rule, ordain and decree as follows:
1. In a patent granting arms to a woman (the ’primary grantee’), versions of the same arms bearing such substantive differences as the Kings of Arms think appropriate may be granted to be borne by the primary grantee’s children (the ’secondary grantees’), whether legitimate, illegitimate, legitimated or adopted, and their descendants according to the laws of arms.
2. No child of the primary grantee will be a secondary grantee unless named in the grant.
3. All secondary grantees who have the same parentage in law may be granted the same version of the primary grantee’s arms.
4. The substantive differences referred to in paragraph 1 must be distinct from and of greater visual impact than marks of cadency, while not obscuring the intent that the different designs granted be versions of the same arms.
5. The arms granted to the primary grantee are to be granted with the usual destination clause, for herself and her descendants according to the laws of arms.
6. The arms granted to the secondary grantees may be quartered with any arms inherited in the male line.
7. Nothing in this ruling is intended to impair the right of the secondary grantees or their descendants under the law of arms to quarter the arms granted to the primary grantee with any arms inherited in the male line.
8. The fee charged for grants made in accordance with this ruling will be proposed by Chapter to the Earl Marshal on the advice of the Treasurer. The fee for a patent granting one version of the primary grantee’s arms to secondary grantees is to be equal to the fee for a patent granting arms to a woman and her wife, and will cover the grant of a crest to any male secondary grantees or, if there are no male secondary grantees, of a badge to female secondary grantees.
